My love of photography started when I was 20. My dad gave me his Pentax film camera as I headed off to East Asia to model for three years. When my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2007, I bought him his first DSLR for Christmas. Although he was only able to use it for a few months, I started shooting with it a year after his passing, when his namesake (my son, Kellan Takashi) was born.
My dad's favourite thing to photograph was sunsets. I think of him every time I see one.
I see the best in people. For me, there is nothing more satisfying than helping people see the best in themselves reflected back in a photo. My strength as a photographer is making people feel comfortable and helping them shine their brightest.
My experience on the other side of the camera allows me to help people pose and capture them in ways that highlight their best features.
I love doing portraits of people whether it is professional headshots, beauty, family or pets. I am a dog person, but also love snakes, tarantulas and reptiles so nothing is off the table!
Sport action has become one of my favourite things to capture, especially for my son's football teams. Shooting for the Saskatchewan Winter Games gave me a whole new appreciation for sports I would otherwise have not been exposed to, such as artistic swimming, judo, gymnastics, and speed skating. I also shoot rugby, softball, ringette, and track & field.
Everyone is unique so I like to get creative and develop a plan that suites the graduate and their families. More and more grads are choosing to do photos on a day other than the day of the grad formal. This allows for more flexibility to get the best weather and light, and also to not be competing for space at the popular spots. And who doesn't want to wear that beautiful gown/suit again?
I love capturing all kinds of events from Pride Parades and Caribfest to Canada Day celebrations and the Saskatchewan Winter Games.
I feel very connected to nature and love to shoot it all. From our beautiful skies and landscapes to birds, animals, and even the creepiest of insects. We are so fortunate to have stunning displays of aurora in the land of living skies.
